Exposing Religious Nihilism
Abortion Bans, Miscarriage Deaths, and the Rejection of What Exists
There has never been one viable ectopic pregnancy, yet in many places in the US women can be denied life-saving healthcare in the midst of a miscarriage. Laws influenced by religion force doctors to delay or deny care, disregarding all human experience and all human knowledge. This is a denial of what exists; that is nihilism. Their ideas have become more important than people, more important than the world as it is. Women’s lives have been relegated to being worth less than mere beliefs.
This extends beyond ectopic pregnancies to other forms of miscarriage, to incomplete miscarriages, to septic miscarriages, where women wait in hospital parking lots, where doctors consult lawyers instead of treating patients. It extends to treating women’s autonomy as if it’s not part of a life well lived, as if their capacity for self-determination has no intrinsic value. It extends to children, even infants, ripped away from their parents at the border, some never to be reunited. All of this wrapped up in Christian nationalism.
What this is: religious nihilism. Which should be understood more clearly as simply nihilism. Now you know what you’re facing. Act accordingly.
